Project Overview: Structural Repair and Hearth Removal in Ealing
A technical project in Ealing W5 involving structural timber repairs and heritage-focused refinishing of original floorboards.
The Challenge
The primary focus was the removal of an old fireplace hearth and the subsequent ‘re-stitching’ of the floorboards. The sub-floor required the installation of support beams to ensure the integrity of the new boards.
Our Solution
- Structural Work: Removed the concrete hearth and installed two support beams beneath the floor.
- Sanding & Filling: Executed a 3-stage sanding process. For the gaps, we used a bespoke combination of 50% timber slivers and 50% resin filling to ensure a solid, draught-free surface.
- Finishing: Sealed with 3 coats of Clear Bona Mega Lacquer for a durable, natural appearance.
The Result
The room now features a seamless timber surface where the fireplace once stood. The structural repairs have eliminated ‘bounce’ in the floor, and the gap filling has significantly improved the room’s thermal efficiency.
